Here is what you need to know about this eye care exam provided by our New Hartford eye doctor, Dr. Lamberto.
What is a Diabetic Eye Exam?
A diabetic eye exam is an eye exam that is done on those who are suffering from diabetes. This exam includes all of the standard procedures that are normally done during a routine eye exam. Diabetes is a harmful disease that can damage small blood vessels in the retina. This can lead to a condition known as diabetic retinopathy, which can cause blindness if the blood sugar levels are not under controlled.
How Frequently Should I Go For A Diabetic Eye Exam?
Those who do not have their diabetes under control, are elderly, or had prior eye issues or concerns should have this exam done on an annual basis or several times a year. Those who have their diabetes under control and are otherwise in good overall health may be able to have a diabetic eye exam completed every two years.
What Is Done During a Diabetic Eye Exam?
Your diabetic eye exam will begin in the same way as a standard eye exam. You will be asked to read a series of letters off of a Snellen letter chart. From there, a dilated eye exam will occur. Eye drops will be used to dilate your pupils, allowing our New Hartford eye doctor to see the back of your eyes and blood vessels. If our optometrist find an unusual issue, then he will recommend a few treatment options for that problem.
